Control Mother to Child Transmission of HIV
Now in India NACO has announced free medicines to control spreading of mother to child transmission of HIV (MTCT). These medicines are antiretroviral drugs such as AZT and Niverapine. Various surveys have conducted in US and Thailand with these medicines with reduction rate for MTCT of two-third and half respectively. (as stated on NACO)

AZT is also recommended as part of a regimen to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV during pregnancy, labor and delivery. With no treatment, approximately 25% of infants whose mothers are infected with HIV will become infected. AZT has been shown to reduce this risk to approximately 8% when given in a three-part regimen during pregnancy, delivery and to the infant for 6 weeks after birth.
Instead of doing well to child AZT has few side-effects like nausea, headache, changes in body fat, and discoloration of fingernails and toenails. Other severe side effects like anemia, bone marrow suppression can be overcome using erythropoietin or darbepoetin treatments.

HIV-AIDS is very dangerous as we all know about it. But it is good that now forth it will not be transmitted from mother to her child.

AZT isnt Safe for the health of the new born child… but thanks to Technology who took effort to prevent transmitting AIDS. Its better to have some deficiency in a Child rather than completely destroying Life.
