‘Tiger of Madras’ Wins World Chess Championship
It is a double pleasure for the Indian Sports fan. ‘TIGER FROM MADRAS’, Vishwanathan Anand, 37, was crowned world champion of chess after tying his 14th and last match of the contest in quick time with Hungarian Peter Leko on the 14th day of the contest which he dominated from start.
“I enjoy this new feeling of being world champion,” he said.
He replaced Russia’s Vladimir Kramnik. Anand secured nine points in the contest and also ended up as the only unbeaten player in the event.
The Indian, who learned this game at the age of six, had previously won the world championship in 2000. Anand distinguished himself as a youth for his chess acumen. At the age of 13, he won the junior title in India, and at 16, the senior chess title. As a defender, he gets a prize of $390,000 while runner up will go home with $260,000 and third place gets $180,000.
On 26th September, almost the whole Mumbai turned out to welcome their Heroes in a never-seen-before elation. Team India drizzled with phenomenal affection, award and applause. The Indian Hockey Team reacted sharply alleging ‘STEP-MOTHERLY’ treatment by the government and the crowd. The government finally relented and announces Rs. 5 lakhs to every member of the Indian Hockey Team which recently won the Asia Cup with making a record of maximum number of goals in a tournament.
The hockey players accusation was rebounded by V. Anand when he said,
‘he interested to know how many of his countrymen would gave him the same grand reception which was extended to Twenty20 World Cup winning Team India. ‘
Will the people of India respond to the call of the champion who has brought so many small evergreen honors for the country or will his homecoming just turn out to an another affair, is yet to be seen. But it certainly seem to be no scarcity of people who wants to congratulate V. Anand for his feat our the other Seven world’s top chess brain and believe that this achievement is no less important than Twenty20 win.
