What high-end “PDA’s” had, now smart phones will too. “VGA” resolution displays. At the recent SID(Society For Information Display) conference held in San Francisco, TPO(Formely Toppoly & phiips) displayed their 2-inch VGA (640×480) screen.
So far companies adopted the Sub Pixel Rendering technology to manufacture screens but TPO took optimized the LTPS(Low Temperature Polysilicon) technology to produce a screen resolution so high.
In LTPS, a laser beam is used to gradually heat the silicon of the glass which toughens it to create file polysilicon as opposed to coarse shaped silicon that had been the case so far. This process creates smaller transistors on the glass, which allows more light to pass through and creates smaller pixels.
Present day display controllers are capable of supporting only 320×240 pixels. This is attained with a slow 32-bit memory bus shred with the main system RAM. But now with screens as big as two inches and supporting 640×840 pixels, it has given rise to the prospect of sales of millions of discrete graphics accelerators. Along with the two-inch display unit, TPO has created a product line of 2.4-,2.6- and 2.8 inch VGA displays. You will soon see them making their way into the consumer gadget market.
